Everything you need to know about root control

30/09/26 Information

Protect trees and infrastructure by managing root growth effectively

Roots that push up paving, damage pipes or grow unchecked: these are common problems in both urban and green environments. Without the right measures, tree roots can cause significant damage over time. Root control can be used to limit or direct root growth. But what options are available, what is the difference between root barrier and root guidance, and when should you choose which solution?

What is root control?

Root control is a collective term for solutions that limit the growth of tree roots or guide them in a specific direction. The aim is to provide sufficient space for the tree to develop healthily whilst protecting the surrounding infrastructure.

Various solutions can be used for this purpose. Root barriers ensure that the tree roots encounter a barrier; because the material is smooth, the roots cannot gain a foothold and are therefore forced to grow back. Root guidance, on the other hand, directs the roots downwards with the aid of guide ribs.

Damage caused by tree roots

Tree roots grow in search of water, oxygen and nutrients. In doing so, they can end up in places where their growth is undesirable. This can cause problems, particularly in urban areas, where trees and infrastructure are situated close together.

Without the right measures in place, roots can:

  • push up paving, thereby creating unsafe conditions;
  • cause problems with cables and pipes;
  • cause damage to structures and other underground infrastructure.

Much of this damage can be prevented by taking future root development into account when planning the planting site.

Root barrier or root guidance?

Root barriers and root guidance are often confused, but they work differently. Which solution is suitable depends mainly on the distance from the tree and the specific situation.

As a rule of thumb:

  • More than 2 metres from the tree: root barrier. RootBarrier™ blocks roots and prevents them from growing into vulnerable areas.
  • Within 2 metres of the tree: root guidance. RootBarrier™ RollRib™ directs roots downwards using vertical ribs. In addition, Rollrib can be used both vertically and horizontally.

This allows the right solution to be chosen for each situation to protect both the tree and the surrounding infrastructure.
